Focus is a challenge. I think artists especially have a hard time focusing. Focus is probably my number one challenge. For example, if I am outside and I begin painting a certain project and a butterfly breezes by…I want to go chase it! Maybe for you it isn’t a butterfly but it is your phone. It goes off making that wonderful
tinkling sound and you just have to check it. Who just texted you?! You must find out! When we begin a new project, whether it is a new oil painting or e-mail campaign, there is always something prettier and shinier to go chase! If you want to be successful you must have self discipline and you need to stay focused on what you are doing and stay put.
Focus On It
As an artist and an entrepreneur I need to be both child and parent. The child is the creative and playful one. The parent is the disciplined one. I constantly talk to myself and tell myself to stay put and finish the task at hand. It doesn’t just happen. It is a conscious effort. If I need to sit down and write a blog then I tell myself to keep at it until it is done. Period. I fight that impulse (that child) that wants to get up and go do something else. I consciously tell myself to not get up until my blog is finished. Period.
Child And Parent
Most artists fail for lack of focus than any other reason. They start off in a certain medium and style and then change it because they say they are bored. All artists and all business owners experience being bored. If you are to become a master at any particular thing you must stay focused and keep going. There will be a breakthrough and you will transcend to the next level just stick with it. This is when the parent in you needs to step in and tell the child to stay put.
Drip, Drip, Drip
Success in anything is a constant drip, drip, drip of daily effort. It is that stacking of daily work that pays off. It is putting the time, effort and focus into running your own business and living your own dream everyday that will make you a success in business. Stay focused, keep at it and you will succeed.
