Painted Desert is a 26” X 28” original oil painting by Kristen. In the style of regionalist artist, Thomas Hart Benton, in a tribute to him as one of her all time favorite fine artists, this is Kristen’s version of a painted desert, along with a cow skull, colorful rock formations, animal bones, old petrified wood, a single yucca tree and a landscape that moves into the distance for miles and miles. “I love, love, love color. Deserts are one of the most colorful landscapes.
I have so much fun painting skulls and I do have an attraction to bones. I find their texture to be wonderful. Skulls also make such interesting subjects to paint. I wonder what kind of animal that it belonged to and what it was like when it was alive. In this painting I take liberties with the colors. I got to use purples for the foreground rock formations, I got to use yellow for the miles and miles of flat land areas, I was able to add some green for foliage and bushes and the single tree, I enjoyed using the browns for the bones and rocks.
Deserts are very colorful. This is actually one of my personal favorite paintings. I like the flow and textures of the paints and I thoroughly appreciate the subject matter. We have one of the most beautiful countries in the world, the United States, and there is an unlimited supply of scenery to paint.
America has such variety that I will never tire of painting the beautiful landscapes that this country has to offer.”
