Plumeria & Ginger is a 16” x 20” original oil painting by Kristen of the tropical flowers, the plumeria and ginger, on the island of Kauai in Hawaii. In 2006 Kristen and her son took a trip to visit her best childhood friend who had moved to Kauai. They had known each other since the age of 12 years old and had been neighbors living directly next door to each other. Their parents had also been the best of friends.
It was in March and it would be Kristen’s birthday on the 14th. The day Kristen and her son arrived on Kauai it started to rain. Her best friend had picked the two up at the airport and they were looking forward to 10 days of sun, sand and beach play. This was tropical paradise, island vacationing where they expected to bask in the sun, go snorkeling, hike along the palm tree lined beach trails and wear nothing but bathing suits and shorts. But it kept on raining.
They were staying in Anahola, a small town close to the airport, in the coastal center of the island, in between the south side and north shore. It continued to rain. It rained so much that there were waterfalls where there had not been waterfalls. It rained so much the river overflowed next to her friend’s home and they had to evacuate.
There was so much water that 7 people who were sleeping in tent like structures on the north shore of the island were swept away into the ocean when a dam breached from the pressure of the storm. Across the road where Kristen’s friend lived there was a garden where they went hiking. The ground’s keeper of that garden was a local Hawaiian. He had been preparing the garden for a wedding. He had been trying to get in touch with the bride-to-be but she was not answering her phone. They later discovered that the bride and groom had been in the group of 7 people that had been washed into the ocean.
The guests flying to Kauai to attend their wedding would now be attending their funeral. This painting represents the beauty of Hawaii, the bright colors of the plumeria and ginger flowers that grow wild on the island. The bamboo spider in the corner represents the darkness and tragedy of the events that occurred during that trip.
“Nature is beautiful and awe inspiring, but it can also be brutal. This high contrast painting, with its red, yellow, gold, green and blue colors along with the dark brown Bamboo spider, represents the dark side of nature.”
This painting, Plumeria & Ginger is a wonderful modern realism piece for a collector who loves tropical themes, Hawaii (and spiders)
