Do you have thick skin? Having criticism roll off of you is something you can learn to do. This applies to everybody but especially artists. As artists we are especially
sensitive and that comes with the talent so you must be able to handle critique in a healthy way. I can only tell you how I did it. I hope it helps you find your technique to having tough skin.
Sensitivity to critical comments is really about fear. A fear of not being good enough. I read a book years ago by G. Gordon Liddy (of the infamous Iran Contra Affair) and it was about facing your fears. Liddy said that he faced all of his fears by doing those things that he was afraid of. It made sense to me so I started my journey to face my fears. I was terrified of speaking in front of an audience so I forced myself to take public speaking and acting classes. I got over my fear of public speaking and audiences. I had a fear of heights so I forced myself to go skydiving. I got over my fear of heights.
If you are afraid of criticism then face it. Put your art out there and show people and let them comment. Post your work on your social media page and ask people what they think. You will find that you won’t curl up and die and that you will feel empowered. Doing the thing that you are afraid of is the surest way to getting over it. The other thing I want to suggest is to use what I wrote about in
my last week’s blog on visualization because it is so important. See yourself doing the things that you are fearful of in your mind and see yourself handling it in a healthy way. If you are going to work hard at being successful then be sure to engage your subconscious to help you achieve your success.
Enjoy your journey…
